Comme des Garçons Who got it Right

Every year on the first Monday in May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts an extravagant, star-studded black tie benefit to raise money for the Costume Institute, a self-funded wing of the museum where the most amazing fashion pieces are curated and exhibited. The MET Gala, also known as “the party of the year,” attracts the most popular attendees from fashion, film, music, politics and of course noted influencers.

Unlike other red carpet affairs, the MET gala is known for its visionary themes and even though it is not mandatory for guests to dress accordingly it is certainly advisable. This is what the MET gala is about. Why attend the Gala if not to show off your best interpretation of the theme?

This year’s theme for both the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute exhibition and the Gala is Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In Between. Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo will be the first living designer to be exhibited since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983. The designer’s clothing is living, breathing pieces of art which tell riveting stories. They are filled with layers, often cartoonish colors and shapes, rounded bulbous hips, padding, and interesting spacing and appliques. Kawakubo also plays a lot with androgyny, blurring the lines between gender creating fluidity- Jaden Smith should love her! – proving that her artistic prowess has always been light years ahead of the rest.

When choosing this year’s top looks, we looked at the space between boundaries, movement between gender, space between colors and even the bridge between age: adult and child. While many attendees opted to don “regular” clothing, there were a few who got it right! Here are some of the best looks that truly encompassed Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In Between:
